Naturally Diverse, Uncompromisingly Effective

Unleash the benefits of nature’s finest pumice — a premium volcanic mineral, locally sourced from the Ausperl-owned quarry in Atiamuri, New Zealand. Mined from a unique geological site shaped by two major natural events, this pumice offers exceptional quality and a story as rich as its composition.

What Makes Our Pumice Unique

Our pumice isn’t just another substrate — it’s a piece of New Zealand’s volcanic history. The quarry is made up of two distinct deposits:

  • The first from the massive Taupō volcanic eruption, which blanketed the land in pumice and volcanic glass.
  • The second, a result of the dam giving way, washed a second layer of sediment and pumice over the top. This alluvial layering created a naturally diverse deposit with a wide spectrum of stone types.

As a result, our pumice includes a mix of magma-derived volcanic glass (including basalt, andesite, dacite, and rhyolite), and occasionally other stones and mineral fragments. This diversity gives our pumice its beautiful range of colours — from whites and creams to greys and soft pinks — and a richness in structure that’s rare and natural.

Please Note – Naturally Occurring Variations

Because this is a natural product, colour and composition will vary from batch to batch. While we do hand-sieve and grade our pumice to ensure size consistency and quality, you may notice:

  • A range of colours and tones, due to the mix of volcanic minerals.
  • The occasional inclusion of other stones or mineral fragments, which naturally occur in the layered deposits.

These variations are not flaws, but rather a testament to the natural origin and authenticity of our pumice. We do not bleach or artificially whiten our pumice to maintain its organic integrity and full mineral content. Bleaching would compromise the natural benefits and strip away its unique character — something we don’t believe in.

Why Choose Pumice in Your Mixes?

  • Free-Draining Yet Moisture-Retentive: Holds water longer than bark but drains better than vermiculite, providing optimal hydration without waterlogging.
  • Aeration and Root Health: Keeps soil loose and oxygen-rich, supporting strong root systems and preventing compaction.
  • Durable and Long-Lasting: Unlike organic materials, pumice does not break down over time.
  • Stable Structure: Heavier than perlite, it stays where it’s placed — no floating, shifting, or white residue on the surface.
  • Versatile for Any Planting Situation: Ideal for cacti, succulents, aroids, cuttings, bonsai, and houseplants alike.

Suggested Usage Ratios

  • Indoor Plants: Add 10–30% to your mix for improved aeration and structure.
  • Succulents & Aroids: Use up to 50% for moisture balance and healthy roots.
  • Cacti: Use 60% or more for optimal drainage.
  • Cuttings: Root delicate plants directly in 100% pumice to reduce rot risk.

Note: As pumice is a nutrient-free mineral, we recommend pairing it with our Bio Leaf nutrient products or fertilising regularly. You can also pre-inoculate the pumice with nutrients before use.
