Molasses is a byproduct of the sugar cane refining process. Molasses applied to the soil feeds soil microbes. In addition to carbohydrates Blackstrap Molasses is a source of nitrogen and is high in calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium. It also contains sulfur and a host of micronutrients. Using molasses as fertilizer provides plants with a quick source of energy and encourages the proliferation of beneficial microorganisms.

Molasses also has an interesting property in that in functions as a chelating agent which means it can help convert nutrients in the soil that are chemically unavailable into a form that makes it easier for microbes and plants to absorb.

Add molasses at a rate of 2 to 6 tablespoons to 10 litres of water and drench the soil and plants with the solution. When the molasses is sprayed directly on plant leaves, the nutrients and sugar are absorbed quickly, and nutrients are immediately available.
