Bio-Plus Orchid Bloom 10-3-14 and Bio-Plus Orchid Grow 15-2-9 have been developed and used in New Zealand for over 30 years. Developed by Brian Prior who is a chemist, an orchid grower and understands the nutritional requirements of orchids, it has been formulated to include all the nutrients required to support orchid health, growth and flowering.
Bio-Plus Grow and Bloom are being used by many award-winning New Zealand orchid growers.
The fertiliser is a two-part formulation, one bottle of A solution and one bottle of B solution. Adding equal amounts of each solution to your water is all that is needed to feed your orchids.
Bio-Plus Orchid Food contains 15 nutrients in the right proportions to support orchid health, leaf and vibrant flower development.
Some fertilizers fail to include Calcium, Sulphur, and adequate levels of trace elements. For example, sulphur is needed to initiate flowering, while boron sets the flower buds and calcium produces strong, long lasting stems.
High amounts of phosphorus have been shown to reduce bloom development by as much as 20%. Bio Leaf Orchid fertilisers have low levels of phosphorus.
The formulations contain 6 macro-nutrients Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulphur (S). These are nutrients required in large amounts.
Other minerals, called micro-nutrients (Required in trace amounts) include boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), sodium (Na), zinc (Zn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni) and chlorine (Cl - trace amounts).
The fertiliser is a fully balanced mix and therefore DOES NOT require the addition of any other nutrients.
Another important feature of Bio-Plus Orchid Food is its ability to help stabilize the pH in orchid potting mixes. Huge fluctuations in pH will cause your orchids to sulk.
If the solution is too acidic or too alkaline it can cause ‘lock up’, meaning certain nutrients that are essential for growth, can’t be absorbed by the orchid roots. It is beneficial to maintain the pH level where the elements in the nutrient solution are consistently available to the plant.
Some fertilisers for example, use Urea or too much ammonium nitrogen. Not only does this make the potting mix extremely acidic it can burn the orchid roots. So, to help we have taken away all the guesswork. By simply adding the stock solutions to water the job is done.
Most orchid genera are grown with a potting medium that supplies very little nutrient to the plant, therefore it is important to feed your orchids regularly. We recommend you feed your orchids every second watering or at least once a weak.
Orchid health, growth and blooming is greatly enhanced by regular feeding and watering.
It depends on how detailed you want to be with feeding your orchids. In general orchids have 2 growing stages.
PS: Some orchids have a dormant period. Obviously, you would not feed your orchids if they are dormant.
Many orchid growers use one fertiliser all year round. For this, we recommend that you use Bio-Plus Orchid Bloom 10-3-14. It has a good balance of nutrients to support both growth and flowering.
